Success in the Olympic hurdles events requires sprinter’s speed plus solid technique as the competitors glide over their obstacles on their way to the finish line. Illustrated Sprint Hurdles Technique THE COMPETITION The modern Olympics feature three different hurdles events, all of which take place on the track: 100-meter hurdles 110-meter hurdles 400-meter hurdles 100-meter hurdles  This women’s race is run on a straightaway. Track & Field : Introduction to Sprints and Relays

Rules for the three individual sprint events (100, 200 and 400 meters) contain only slight differences. The relay races (4 x 100 and 4 x 400 meters) have additional rules regarding baton passing. Rules for each event are the same for men and women. EQUIPMENT The relay baton is a smooth, hollow, one-piece tube made of wood, metal or any other rigid material. It measures between 28-30 centimeters long, and between 12-13 centimeters in circumference. The baton must weigh at least 50 grams. THE COMPETITION All Olympic sprint and relay events include eight runners, or eight teams, in the final. Depending on the number of entries, individual sprint events include two or three preliminary rounds before the final. In 2004, the 100- and 200-meter events included one round of preliminary heats followed by quarterfinal and semifinal rounds prior to the final. Attending a track and field meet is a lot like watching a three-ring circus, with a variety of action happening at the same time. Runners stride around the track, sometimes sprinting, other times pacing themselves. Some athletes leap over obstacles while others pass silver batons to teammates. There are horizontal and vertical jumpers, as well as throwers tossing a variety of objects. Above all, there are men and women, or girls and boys, competing in many unique events. 22ND ASIAN ATHLETICS CHAMPIONSHIPS 2017 6-9 JULY 2017 BHUBANESWAR – ODISHA 08 Apr. 17, AFI Media India will once again proudly host the prestigious Asian Athletics Championships from July 6-9, 2017 at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneshwar (Odisha). The 22nd edition of the Championships, which was earlier scheduled to be held in Ranchi, Jharkhand from July 1-4, 2017. However, after Ranchi’s inability to host the event, the Government of Odisha stepped up to stage the prestigious event at refurbished Kalinga Stadium. On March 30, after a detailed presentation by Adille J Sumariwalla, President AFI, the Asian Athletics Association Council confirmed Bhubaneswar as a host of the Asian Meet. “AFI in past successfully hosted the Asian Championships in 1983 in Delhi and then again in 2013 in Pune. Officially, India's Olympic history started in 1900 when Norman Pitchard, a man of British descent participated in the 1900 Summer Olympics. He won two silver medals for India, but considering that both his parents were from Britain and it was an India under the British Empire, many wouldn't call him the first Indian at the Olympics. Post-Independence, India had suffered a lot in terms of a peaceful and progressive atmosphere, which was a huge obstacle in cultivating global-standard players. Despite the shortcomings in the administration there were a few who not only reached the global platform but also made India's presence felt in their respective events.
